Redefining faith: how an identity rebrand helped to reconnect a church with its community

Redefining faith: how an identity rebrand helped to reconnect a church with its community

The Challenge

The Chilliwack Alliance Church (CAC) faced a problem that many religious organizations face: how do you stay relevant to your local community? From the very old to the very young, churches need to appeal to a broad demographic. With a new pastor, a young family man, the church’s new mission was to attract younger families and youth. A superb infrastructure was already there, with programs and support for families, but something else was lacking.

CAC found themselves in a competitive market. They were losing younger members to more forward-thinking and upbeat churches in the area. With a shrinking and ageing congregation, it became apparent that they needed a change. A refresh. A re-brand. The church’s brand identity was created a long time ago. And it was starting to show its age. The outdated look didn’t reflect the church’s values as a vibrant and supportive centre for families and the wider community.

So CAC approved Khula Design Studio to help them transform their brand image and identity into something more modern, impactful, and meaningful.

The Outcome

After an initial discovery phase, we took the church’s new visual direction and wish list and used it to inform our research. Mood boarding different concepts, we settled on one which would distinguish CAC from the other churches in the community. The colour palette was perfect, but the initial logo design didn’t quite work. So we took it back to the drawing board. Emerging with three more solid concepts going in different directions. This time, church members had some time and the opportunity to explore them.

Opinions were divided on which concept worked best. Some members loved the designs, others didn’t feel it was strong enough yet. Undeterred, we went back to the design studio one more time. However, before doing that, we collated which design elements CAC members loved about the different iterations. Using the congregation's feedback, we produced a third and final concept. The CAC members loved it!

At Khula Design Studio, we love it when our clients are actively involved in what we’re doing. It shows they care about the end result, and helps us better align with their vision. CAC now has a distinct brand identity that reflects its values and vision as a community-centred organization that has meaningful appeal for younger generations to come.

Good design needs to have meaning, purpose, and input from the audience it serves. And that means there sometimes needs to be an iterative process in order to bring the client’s vision to life.
