The Challenge

When you’re on a mission to create the world’s most scalable, best-performing, and richly-featured data trust platform — it’s essential to have a brand identity people can trust. Toronto-based data engineering company, Data Sentinel, supports global organizations with data privacy, governance, risk, and compliance requirements.

Being in the business of compliance and trust means it’s essential for Data Sentinel to communicate professionalism and trust at every touchpoint with their clients. Hard to believe then that this venture capitalist-backed startup was missing a cohesive brand identity across multiple channels — including their website and social media. 

In fact, before Data Sentinel began working with Khula Design Studio, their colours, styling, and identity varied depending on where you looked — except for a basic logo. Lacking a cohesive and holistic identity, their existing Webflow website was also missing key content that was present on competitors’ sites. Not ideal for a scaling business in a competitive market.    

Another key driver in Data Sentinel’s move towards a clearer brand identity and website redesign was their desire to create a stronger, bolder online presence that would attract larger clients. 

The Outcome

With Khula Design Studio on board, researching, and mood boarding began. In the first phase, we focused on creating a brand identity and visual system that could be rolled out across every touchpoint. Once we had a solid, bold brand image in place, it became the cornerstone of the next phase, and the launch pad for Data Sentinel to distinguish itself from competitors. The second phase focussed more closely on the competitive landscape. Combining both industry and SEO research, we analysed the company’s key competitors’ websites, identifying content gaps and keywords crucial for building Data Sentinel’s online presence and domain authority. This research then informed our information architecture and website structure.

With the research completed, we created UX wireframes for the new flow and content structure of the site. Alongside this development, our copywriting team created the new content and messaging which was more closely aligned to the brand, and optimized for SEO. Using our storytelling framework, we created a more compelling homepage for Data Sentinel’s visitors. With the pages mapped and 90% of the copy completed, we merged the two to get a sense of the new website interface, and to ensure the brand identity was consistent across the site. It was during the UI design phase that Data Sentinel contributed app UI widget and chart designs, utilizing the new brand colours. These images were later integrated into the site’s design, replacing stock photos, so that potential clients get a better feel for the product itself.

Once the UX and UI passed approval, the Webflow development could take place. We assembled the site's assets, migrated the content, and uploaded widget images. Further SEO fundamentals were added and refined, before a site-wide quality assurance was carried out. Running alongside the website overhaul, we offered extended services to Data Sentinel, to ensure their new brand images covered every possible client touchpoint, including:
